Francis SEGRAVE, Sr.

Male Est 1668 - Abt 1726  (~ 58 years)

Personal Information    |    Sources    |    Event Map    |    All

  • Name Francis SEGRAVE
    Suffix Sr.
    Birth Est 1668  [1, 2
    • It is likely that Francis was born between 1650 and 1670, possibly in Virginia or North Carolina, but just as possibly in England or Ireland. His estimated date of birth is based on two references:

      1. In January 1696 /1697 he "proved five rights [writs] for five persons transported into this country [Perquimans Precinct, Colony of North Carolina]....viz: himself, Lucretia his wife, Thomas his son, Francis his son, and William Powel"
The transportation entry suggests that Francis was a married adult with two children in 1697. If he married Lucretia at about the age of 20 in 1690 or 1691, they could easily have had the two sons noted in the transportation writ by 1697. Using an age range of 18 to 25 for a marriage in 1690/91 suggests a possible birth year from 1665 to 1673.

      2. His will was proved (approved by a court) 22 Jan 1727. From the date his will was proved, he probably died in late 1726 since colonial courts did not meet frequently. If he died at an age which was reasonable for those times (from 50 to 60 years of age); he could have possibly been born from 1666 to 1676.
I believe that 1668 is a reasonable choice at this point for an 'assumed' year of birth until more factual information comes along.
    • As to his place of birth, only the DAR Patriot Index listing for John Seagraves, son of Francis' daughter Susannah, identifies Francis as his ancestor who came from England. It is not clear how accurate that information might be. If it was based on information directly from the named John Seagraves, it might be based on actual family knowledge, if it is not, it could be distorted in some way. Given Francis' date of birth, he could easily have been born in America since there were thousands of colonists in southern Virginia by the mid-1600s. As with his date of birth, his actual place of birth awaits better information.

    Family Lucretia LNU
    Marriage
    • It is unknown where or when Francis, Sr. married Lucretia. No records have been found that mention them and no record of a Lucretia appears in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia records that could be her.
It can be assumed based on guesses of the ages of their children, that they married in the 1680s and that it was possibly in Isle of Wight County. She first appears as Francis' wife in the transportation writs of January 1697 when he is taking his family from Isle of Wight County to Perquimans Precinct in neighboring North Carolina.
