 #   Notes   Linked to
5901 The US Department of Veterans Affairs BIRLS Death File give Tom's enlistment date in the US Army as 5 Jan 1943 and his release date as 7 Sep 1945. SEAGRAVES, Thomas J. (I5975)

5902 The US Department of Veterans Affairs BIRLS Death File gives Robert's enlistment date as 7 as 1938, but the Army WW II Enlistment Records show 7 Jan 1941. SEAGRAVES, Robert L. (I4958)

5903 The US Dept of Veterans Affairs BIRLS Death File lists two release dates for John Seagrave: 2 May 1919 and 30 Sep 1921. We assume he served the full span. SEAGRAVE, John Claire (I7805)

5904 At least one living or private individual is linked to this note - Details withheld. SEAGRAVES, Shane Roman (I8016)

5905 The US Social Security Applications and Claims Index gives John Henry's birth date as 5 Nov 1867 in Madison County, GA, while his Findagrave.com memorial says he was born 5 Nov 1868 which is the date on his gravestone. As is our practice, the carving on his gravestone has been chosen as the official date. SEAGRAVES, John Henry (I7930)

5906 The US Social Security Applications and Claims Index shows Daniel Weathers Seagrave, born 27 Jan 1921 in Cuba as son of Daniel R. Seagrave and Caroline Weathers. SEAGRAVE, Daniel Weathers (I7583)

5907 The US Social Security Applications and Claims Index shows his birthplace as Ayersville, KY, but no search for that town has found it in Kentucky. There is one in northwestern Ohio and in central Georgia. Norman's Findagrave.com memorial and his WWII draft registration specify that he was born in Louisa, Lawrence County, KY. His KY birth certificate and death certificate say he was born in Walsh, Greenup County, KY while his WW I draft card shows it as Flat Gap, Johnson County, KY which is where his family was residing on the 1900 census when he was 5 years old.
It is clear that he was born in KY in the far northeastern part of the state among Lawrence, Greenup and Johnson counties. His 2-year older brother, Monroe, claimed birth in Lawrence County, so we will select that as his official birthplace.
SAGRAVES, Norman (I7751)

5908 The US Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007 gives Alvin's birthplace as Woodstown, Salem County, New Jersey; but Findagrave.com says it was Quinton, Salem County which is where he lived later in life and which is only a few miles SE of the city of Salem. His family lived in Pilesgrove, NJ in 1920 when he was 3 and that is a more likely place for his birth.
I have chosen to stay with the Quinton location until better information comes along.
SEAGRAVES, Alvin M. (I2019)

5909 The US Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007 gives the birth date for Angelina S. Price as 25 Dec 1878 as does her  SEAGRAVES, Angeline (I7519)

5910 The US Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007 on Ancestry.com describes Thomas' birthplace as Manchester, Coffee County, Tennessee.  SEAGRAVES, Thomas Andrew (I1385)

5911 The US Social Security Claims & Applications Index gives Cova's birth date as 6 Jun 1897 and his death date as 1 Oct 1955; however, Kentucky Death Records, 1852-1963 do not list Cova. SEAGRAVES, Cova Lee Sr. (I4153)

5912 The US Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014 records Merda Sagraves birthdate as 12 Feb 1900 which ties with the 1900 census which records Oscar Sagraves as born in Feb 1900.
However the WW I draft registration card for Merida Oscar Sagraves gives his birth date as 12 Aug 1900.
To further confuse matters, the gravestone for Merda Sagraves shows a generic birth year of 1899.
The first two sources seem to outweigh the draft card, so I will use the 12 Feb 1900 date.
SAGRAVES, Merida Oscar (I4851)

5913 The Virginia Marriage Registers, 1853-1935 on Ancestry.com gives Alice's name as "Alice Corban Toney" suggesting she had been married before to a man named Toney. A record of that marriage has not yet been found. Family: Fred Clyde SEAGRAVES / Alice Corbin BENDALL (F3143)

5914 The Vital Records of Uxbridge, MA" gives her death as 26 Aug 1836 at age 15 months as does her gravestone, but the Genealogy of the Seagrave family and the Ward Family genealogy give 26 Aug 1835. I have elected to go with the official record and the gravestone date. SEAGRAVE, Matilda (I5167)

5915 The Will and Probate Papers of Edward Fletcher Seagrave filed in Alameda County, California in 1914 list as an asset a cemetery plot in Mount Olivet Cemetery. The Findagrave.com listing for his wife, Sarah F. Carpenter Seagrave, show her buried in Olivet Memorial Park in Colma, San Mateo County, California, the successor name for Mount Olivet Cemetery.
However, no grave for Edward can be identified in that cemetery or any other in California or elsewhere. If he is somewhere, perhaps the names are incorrectly spelled.
SEAGRAVE, Edward Fletcher (I4739)

5916 The William Segraves tied by Ancestry.com to this William as the one who married Jane C. Brown in Rutherford County, Tennessee in 1847 and the 11th Texas Infantry Regiment and both the 1860 and 1870 Cherokee County, Texas censuses, is a William H. Seagroves, born 16 Jul 1832 in North Carolina and died 14 Mar 1895 in Farmville, Chatham County, North Carolina. He is shown as having married an Amanda Burns in Chatham County, North Carolina in 1854, so the William H. of Chatham County, even with a similar birth date, is not likely the William who married Jane in Tennessee and moved to Texas.
Ancestry regularly conflates people of similar names and ages, and clearly these two are different men. The William Segraves, age 15, on the 1850 census in the Upper Regiment, Chatham County, North Carolina did not go to Tennessee and then to Texas. No other 1850 census record appears to show the Texas-bound William with a bride named Jane. He should have been in Tennessee since his older children were born there.
SEAGRAVES, William (I6111)

5917 The WW I and WW II draft registration cards for Earl Segraves both give his birth date as 11 Nov 1890, only the Social Security Death Index cites 10 Nov 1890. To help confuse matters, the 1900 census shows him born in Nov 1889.
I will stay with the 11 Nov 1890 dates given by him on his draft cards.
The both cards show him born in Bloomsbury, NJ which is consistent with the Births and Christenings Index which say he was born in Hunterdon County (where Bloomsbury is located).
SEAGRAVES, Earl (I4555)

5918 The WW I draft registration card for S. M. Segraves gives his age as 39 and his birth date as 3 March 1879. Other sources such as the 1910 and 1930 censuses say he was born in 1881 as does his Findagrave.com memorial and his 2 marriage records suggest a date between 1880 and 1882. Since he cannot be found on the 1880 census, we have decided to use the March 3rd date along with 1881 as his semiofficial birth date. SEAGRAVES, Samuel M. (I7309)

5919 Their marriage date is based on the estimated birth year of 1810 of their eldest known child, Melisa. Family: Willie SEAGRAVES / Elizabeth LNU (F249)

5920 Thelma is buried with her second husband as Thelma Ruth Hayes Chaney. HAYES, Thelma Ruth (I6860)

5921 Thena Jane's birthplace varies, but is generally consistent as to North Carolina even though her death certificate and the 1900 census report she was born in Tennessee. Other censuses, including the 1880 census for Sullivan Co., TN confirm she was born in North Carolina. SEAGRAVES, Thena Jane (I1264)

5922 Thena Jane's Tennessee death certificate indicates that she died in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee and her obituary says she died at her home at 131 Copeland street in Knoxville; however, her Findagrave.com memorial says she died in Fentress County, TN. We suspect that since she was living in Knoxville on the 1920 census just before her death, it is more likely she was there at her death. SEAGRAVES, Thena Jane (I1264)

5923 There appears to be a duplicate listing on Ancestry.com. There is a memorial on findagrave.com in the name of Maria Segraves, daughter of William Henry and Melvina Belle Segraves, born and died in 1901, in the Sullivan Cemetery in Garrison, Lewis County, KY and one in the name of Nellie Marie Segraves, born and died in 1901, buried in Garrison, Lewis County, KY with no cemetery named.
There is no record of either child born or died in KY around 1901 in "Kentucky, Birth Records, 1847-1911" or Kentucky, Death Index, 1911-2000".
SEAGRAVES, Marie (I7532)

5924 There are 2 listings in the California Divorce Index, 1956-1984 fro Phillip C. Seagrave. One dated Jun 1977 in San Diego lists his wife as Betty J. Bineham and the other on 14 Jul 1980 also in San Diego lists his wife as Betty B.
I am not sure if these are misdated duplicates or just filing errors or two different divorces altogether.
Family: Phillips Campbell SEAGRAVE / Betty Bineham BERGER (F2184)

5925 There are conflicting dates for the birth of George Wiley Seagraves. The personal history of Kate Isabell Seagraves of Yadkin County, not a direct descendant, says he was born 11 June 1878. The "Cemeteries of Yadkin County, NC" by Carl C. Hoots, gives it as 11 June 1875 and "The Reverend William Segraves and His Descendants" by Savannah Segraves Day uses 1 June 1875. Findagrave.com shows him as George Wiley Segraves, born 11 June 1873 and died 8 May 1957, buried in the Swan Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Jonesville, Yadkin County, North Carolina.
They all agree about the month and the years are close, so we have used the Findagrave.com listing and dates.
SEAGRAVES, George Wiley (I2537)

5926 There are two Findagrave.com memorials for Paul. One is FAG Memorial #154488688 added 1 Nov 2015 which shows him buried in Guilford Memorial Park in Greensboro, Guilford County, NC. The other is FAG Memorial #234077071 added 16 Nov 2021 which shows him buried in Oakwood Cemetery in High Point, Guilford County, NC.
Since we are unable to visit each cemetery to determine which is correct, we will assume that the more recent memorial is the more accurate one.
SEAGRAVES, Paul Franklin (I2884)

5927 There has been no grave found for Edward, Jr. in Vermont or Massachusetts in spite of the fact his tombstone is quoted in the "Genealogy of the Seagrave Family, 1725-1881". SEAGRAVE, Edward Jr. (I4727)

5928 There is a conflict between Findagrave.com (FAG) and other records regarding the children of Louise Knipp.
FAG lists Louise as the mother of 8 Seagraves children: Joseph (1904-1922); Noah (1906-1994); Tracy (1912-1912); Lacy (1912-1913; Julia (1914-1918); Martin (1916-1917); Jessie (1917-1919); and Jamima Alice (1918-2005). The spouse of Louise, who was born in 1890, is listed as Jacob Seagraves (1874-1926). Presumably they were married about 1903 or 1904 to be the parents of Noah, born 24 Jun 1904, or they could have been married before 1903. But Louise would have been only 13 in July 1903. Not impossible, but unlikely.
We have not been able to find a record of the marriage between Louise Knipp and Jacob Seagraves. We have Jacob listed as born 23 Oct 1874 in Kentucky as Individual #i4404. He is recorded on the 1900 census in Maddox, Carter County, Kentucky as 27, born in Oct 1872 in KY, a farm laborer, both parents born in KY, married 3 years, son of Joseph and Elizabeth Segraves; married to Litha Segraves, 20, born in 1880 in KY, W, married 3 years. On the 1910 census Jacob is recorded as Jacob Segraves [indexed as Segmus], 37, KY, residing on Goodale St, Grayson, KY, farmer, married 14 years; Delitha, wife, 30, KY, married 14 years, mother of 5 children with 4 still living; John W., son, 11, KY: Joseph F., son, 6, KY; Noah O., son, 3, KY; Phebe E., dau, 1/12, KY.
There is a KY marriage record for Louisa E. Nipp, age 14, marrying Jas E. Segraves in Carter County, KY on 2 Jul 1905; but none for a marriage to Jacob.
It is not clear what sources were used to connect Louise to Jacob or to designate him as the father of her children on FAG. However, since the death certificate for their 6th child, Jessie Seagraves, born 24 Apr 1917 and died 25 Oct 1919, identifies his parents as James Segraves and Louise Knipp, plus their marriage record dated 2 Jul 1905, we believe that Louise was married to James E. Seagraves Individual #i7749, born in Feb 1885 in Carter County, KY and not Jacob Seagraves as reported on FAG.
SEAGRAVES, Jessie (I8098)

5929 There is a letter from J. [James] Seagrove to The Honorable Thomas Bee, Esq., Member in Congress for South Carolina, dated 7 September 1781 from Havana, Cuba. The letter relates a series of "interviews" between Mr. Seagroves and a "Don Galvas, General and Commander in Chief of all the troops belonging to Spain in this part of the world" mostly discussing Spanish military activities in Florida.
It is a 2-page letter written in fairly legible long-hand by a clearly educated man. I started to transcribe it hoping to find some personal facts about James. He is in our database as being born about 1748 and dying in 1812 in Camden Co., GA
SEAGROVE, James (I8370)

5930 There is conflict over the place of Minnie's death. Her Death Certificate and Findagrave.com memorial say she died in Elkin, Surry County, NC. The "Reverend William Segraves and His Descendants says it was in Yadkin County, NC.
We have opted for the official record in this case.
SEAGRAVES, Minnie Lou (I3067)

5931 There is no birth record for a Sadie Seagraves or any other child born to George Seagraves and Annie B. Core in "North Carolina Birth Indexes, 1800-2000" or any similar source. Two census records (1930 and 1940) are consistent about her name and date of birth, so we have included her. SEAGRAVES, Sadie (I7195)

5932 There is no clear explanation for the use of the name "Joseph" on this census. Perhaps he was still concerned about being discovered by Confederate sympathizers from Tennessee, which may also explain why he kept using the Seegraves spelling of his family name, both during and after the Civil War. SEAGRAVES, John Henderson (Gil 2) (I115)

5933 There is no explanation for him being listed on the census three years after his death.

SEAGRAVES, Emory Peter (Gil 4) (I990)

5934 There is no explanation for the conflict with this date and his 1991 date of death in Florida. SEAGRAVES, Edwin Arthur (I2362)

5935 There is no explanation for the conflict with this date and his 1991 date of death in Florida. SEAGRAVES, Edwin Arthur (I2362)

5936 There is no explanation for the conflict with this date and his 1991 date of death in Florida. SEAGRAVES, Edwin Arthur (I2362)

5937 There is no listing on Findagrave.com for any Jackson with names or dates similar to those given on his death certificate. JACKSON, Pressley Nave (Gil 5) (I7864)

5938 There is no recorded gravesite for Sarah on Findagrave.com or Billiongraves.com or on the City of Boston website. SEAGRAVE, Sarah (I6650)

5939 There is no source yet discovered that shows this individual's given names (Samuel and Henry) together. Various overlapping sources do indicate that it is one person who is most often listed as Samuel. Here is a list of the sources which list him as Samuel with the key overlapping facts:
5 Mar 1803 Samuel Seagreaves, born 5 Mar 1803 to Henry & Eva Seagreaves , buried 23 Jun 1869 in Berks Co., PA- from "Pennsylvania and New Jersey Church and Town Records, 1669-2013"
1850 census for Reading, Berks Co., PA lists Samuel Seagreaves, age 40, born in PA, listed as a Painter, with wife, Rebecca, age 40.
16 Nov 1856 Samuel Seagreaves married Hannah Houck in Reading, PA- from "Pennsylvania and New Jersey Church and Town Records, 1669-2013"
1860 census for Reading, Berks Co., PA lists Samuel Seagreaves, age 56, born in PA, listed as a H. (house) Painter, with wife, Hannah, age 50.
Here is a list of the sources which list him as Henry with the key overlapping facts:
Findagrave.com lists Henry Seagraves as born 5 Mar 1803 and died 23 Jun 1869, buried in the Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading, PA. His memorial says he was the son of Henry and Eve Seagraves and the husband of Hannah Houck.
SEAGRAVES, Samuel Henry (I8437)

5940 There is some confusion in the records about Lula's surname. Her Findagrave.com memorial lists her as Lula Mae Cash Stone. The North Carolina Marriage Records, 1741-2011 says she married David Segroves on 25 May 1940 in Lee County, NC as Lula Cook. Newspapaers.com Marriage Index, 1800s-current shows that David Lester Segroves married Lula Mae Cash on 1 Jun 1940 in Sanford, Lee County, NC.
We believe that her maiden name was likely Cash. May 25, 1940 was a Saturday and June 1st was a Wednesday, so we believe that the 25th was a more likely wedding day, so we will use that record unless better data come along.
CASH, Lula Mae (I8644)

5941 These sources ("Tennessee Deaths and Burials Index, 1874-1955" on Ancestry.com and her tombstone in the Crowder Cemetery in Macon County, Tennessee) give her birth date as 19 August 1856 which is somewhat more consistent with the birth spacing of her siblings and with her age on the 1870 census. However, others say 19 Aug 1853 (FindAGrave.com and page from Sarah Florann's family Bible). SEAGRAVES, Sarah Florann (Gil 3) (I246)

5942 They probably married in probably Jackson County. SEAGRAVES, Albert Lee (I1433)

5943 They were possibly married in Knox County, Kentucky. Family: Joseph SAGRAVES, Sr. / Mary Anna JONES (F231)

5944 They were probably married in Cooke County, Texas Family: Billy Mike HUGHES / Linda Kay SEAGRAVES (F366)

5945 They were probably married in Cooke County, Texas.  SEAGRAVES, Linda Kay (I1112)

5946 They were probably married in Jefferson County, Arkansas.  Family: Raymond Roscoe (Gil 5) SEAGRAVES / Anita MITCHELL (F74)

5947 They were probably married in Simpson County, Kentucky. BENNETT, Robert F. (I907)

5948 This child is not mentioned in "The Heritage of Wake County, North Carolina" 1983, by the Wake County Genealogical Society, Family #775 written by Edith Segraves and the dates of birth of Lucy & Barnabas conflict so I am not certain if she is actually a child of Solomon as stated on the Findagrave.com entry (perhaps she is a niece?). SEAGRAVES, Aleacy (I734)

5949 This child is not proved by any published record and may not be a child of Charles. Albert later married a Rebecca probably in Wake County. Family: Charles SEAGRAVES / Mary PARISH (F272)

5950 This child represents the female child 0-4 years old listed with Britain on the 1830 census for Wilkes County, North Carolina. SEAGRAVES, unknown female (I765)
